We know that parents and families are keen to support their children at home so we continue to add information about how we teach subjects at school which will help you to support your child with their learning at home.
Early Years (Nursery and Reception)
Have you ever wondered 'What to expect and when?'
Welcome to Tapestry
We are very pleased to announce our new online learning journeys! We have decided to create individual ‘learning journeys’ for your child through a piece of educational software called ‘Tapestry’. By logging on with a secure username and password, you will be able to view all of your child’s observations, photographs and even videos from their time in The Nest and in Reception. You will even receive an email telling you when a new observation or piece of work is available for you to view. This will enable you to follow your child’s progress and give you the opportunity to reflect upon their achievements with them at home. You can add comments so that we are able to find out which activities your child really enjoyed as well as sharing the activities they carry out at home. Staff will reference your child’s learning to the EYFS profile so you will know which area of learning your child is achieving in and the age-band they were working in for that activity. All of this information is stored on a highly secure server which is monitored closely.
Sounds in spoken language – the beginning of phonics
At Grassington CE (VC) Primary School when children enter the Reception class they take part in high quality phonics sessions every day. These are fun sessions involving lots of speaking, listening and games, where the emphasis is on children’s active participation. They quickly learn to use their phonic knowledge for reading and writing activities and in their independent play.
We use the graphemes from the Read, Write Inc Scheme to help children learn letter sounds and how to write them. At first they learn the single sounds followed by two letter sounds such as ‘ee’ and ‘oo’.
The letter cards that we use to teach the sounds are available for parents to use at home. Please follow the link if you would like to see what resources we use.

From September 2015 we have bought a new maths scheme called, Inspire Maths.
The Inspire Maths primary school series, using the mastery approach from Singapore, has been created specifically for the UK education sector.
Aligned to the 2014 English National Curriculum for Maths, the Inspire Maths series is used in schools across the country and as part of NCETM’s Maths Hub programme.
The focus of the series is on teaching to mastery by allowing enough time on a topic for a child to comprehend it thoroughly before moving on. Based on the recommendations of research studies around the globe, the programme emphasises problem-solving and pupils using their core competencies to develop a relational understanding of mathematical concepts.
